Observed one of my hives this morning and suddenly saw thousands of house bees emerge and take flight in lazy spirals round the hive and yard. It’s the bee’s ablution flight. This takes place at the nicest time of the day weatherwise and for ten minutes or so. Many of the house bees come out and go back into the hive after having some flight practice and a crap. Each hive decides on its own time of evacuation.
This hygienic behaviour has evolved from a confined and dense hive population which could lead to disease. So to combat this problem, bees have had to become extremely clean in their home and have a permanent cleaning squad working continuously. They collect and use tree resins as a disinfectant within the hive. This is propolis and is collected by us at the Bee Whisperer, as it is used in natural medicines.
